Since 2019, there has been an increase in new LNG projects. This is especially true of Mozambique, where developments in technology are opening up previously stranded reserves and there have been significant moves towards the commoditization of LNG. New and on-going projects continue to provide engineering jobs in Mozambique.

Two of the largest LNG project developments underway in Mozambique

Rovuma LNG Project - Cost: $22.4 billion

Mozambique’s Rovuma LNG project is one of the top 10 projects to watch during 2020.

Africa’s largest ever private project is being operated by ExxonMobil and is part of a series of major projects set to transform the country’s natural gas industry over the next five years.

The Rovuma LNG facility will have an initial cost of $500 million for construction of the initial two liquefaction trains and associated onshore facilities, with further construction due after. It’s expected that each train will output 8.2 million tons of LNG per year, with the facility due to operate for at least 30 years.

LNG Project - Cost: $15 billion

Like the Rovuma project, Mozambique LNG is a massive undertaking that will shape the country’s economic future and create thousands of jobs over several years.

Saipem, in Joint Venture with McDermott International and Chiyoda Corporation, has reached agreement with Area 1 Concessionaires on an EPC Contract to engineer and construct an onshore LNG project in Mozambique. Saipem, as involved in the project for a volume currently equal of about 6 billion USD, will operate as leader of CCSJV s.c.a.r.l. (“CCS JV”).

The LNG project consists of the construction of two Natural Gas Liquefaction (LNG) trains, with a total nameplate capacity of 12.88 million tons per annum (MTPA), as well as all necessary associated infrastructure, storage tanks and export jetty facilities. Subsequent phases are being considered which would see the addition of extra trains to increase the volume of LNG that could be exported from the facility.

The Plant will derive its natural gas feedstock predominantly from the fields of the Area 1 block such as Golfinho-Atum Complex and the Prosperidade Complex. It is expected that the Mamba Complex and Coral FLNG will also supply natural gas to the Plant.

It's estimated the project will come online by 2024. The initial construction, operation and maintenance stages are expected to create 15,000 jobs.
