Developments in the Middle East engineering scene
In the Middle East, engineering and construction jobs have been hugely in demand due to the mega projects underway in the area.
With projects like The Line in Saudi Arabia, Sultan Haitham City in Oman, and Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai among just a few innovations happening in 2024, the region has become an attractivelocation for professionals to develop and progress in their career in engineering.
From mechanical engineers to electrical engineers, there’s a range of Middle East engineering jobs on the rise. We’re summoning highly skilled professionals to make waves in these giga projects.
Engineering and construction are really booming in the Middle East, so what are some of the more recent developments?
The Line, Saudi Arabia
With Saudi Vision 2030 a top policy priority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it’s easy to see how The Line at NEOM plays its part in reaching the economic, environmental, and social objectives outlined.
Branded as the future of urban living, Saudi Arabia’s The Line is planned to stretch 170 kilometres from NEOM to the Red Sea. As a mirrored architectural structure that’s set to tower 500 metres above sea level, this mega project will run on 100% renewable energy, with people’s health and well-being a top priority.
Such a visionary project is groundbreaking when it comes to the construction and engineering market within the Middle East and there are plenty of opportunities for engineering professionals to make their mark on the projects shaping the future.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, Dubai
Known as the largest single-site solar park in the world, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a marvel in Dubai construction, supporting the aims of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
By 2030, the solar park will have a production capacity of 5,000MW with a total investment of AED 50 billion. June 2023 marked the 5th phase in the projects development with the solar park with the 6th phase planned for 2024 to 2026.
With the solar park set to reduce more than 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, it’s at the forefront of renewable energy infrastructure.
The Sultan Haitham City project, Oman
As a part of Oman Vision 2040, the Sultan Haitham City project, engineered by SOM, is set to accommodate 100,000 residents of Muscat’s expanding population. The project provides a mix of housing types within walking distance to new public amenities and vibrant open spaces.
The new city is designed with green infrastructure in mind to minimise its ecological footprint while enhancing life for its residents. At the forefront of this Omani engineering project are smart mobility, mico-mobility, resource management and waste reduction.
When it comes to the city’s commitment to Oman Vision 2040, several strategies are proposed to harness solar energy, implement waste-to-energy systems and treat wastewater for reuse.
Oman's forthcoming state-of-the-art infrastructure makes it an increasingly appealing destination for engineering professionals looking to advance their careers.
