Location: Augusta, GA
Status of Hire: salaried, exempt, contract
Contract Duration: 6 months, could go longer
Project: industrial plant construction, greenfield operation
Pay: $120-140k depending on experience ($55-65/hr)
Reports to: Site EHS Manager
Our client is currently seeking a contract Commissioning Safety Engineer to support commissioning of an industrial complex processing manufacturing plant in Augusta, GA. The Commissioning Safety Engineer will ensure mechanical equipment and electrical systems (high voltage, power distribution, etc.) are installed properly and function safely and according to specifications, focusing on safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and identifying potential hazards during the commissioning process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all commissioning activities adhere to relevant safety regulations, local and site work permits, standards, and company policies on the site
- Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop mitigation strategies
- Safety Audits: Perform safety audits of equipment, systems, and facilities to ensure they are safe and compliant
- Documentation: Maintain detailed records of safety procedures, inspections, and findings
- Management: oversight of potentially 1-2 plant EHS Specialists, but also construction contractors (GCs) on-site
- Training: Provide safety training to commissioning teams and other stakeholders
- Collaboration: Work closely with commissioning engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders to ensure safety is a top priority
- Incident Investigation: Investigate safety incidents and recommend corrective actions
- Emergency Procedures: Develop and implement emergency procedures for commissioning activities
- Testing and Troubleshooting: Conduct functional tests and troubleshoot safety-related issues to ensure systems are operating safely and effectively
- Continuous Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in safety practices and procedures
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, safety, industrial hygiene or a related field
- 6+ years experience in industrial plant construction safety, industrial plant or production environment safety, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of complex systems and machinery
- Strong technical aptitude and understanding of safety and industrial hygiene engineering concepts and principles
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA and local safety regulations, standards, and best practices
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse, multicultural team from plant floor operators up through executive leadership
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH) are a plus
