1. Communication is key


Effective communication is one of the top skills needed for management positions. 


Communicating effectively extends to not only sharing information but also listening to your team.

Each team member will have different roles and outlooks on the business strategy. 


By allowing them to freely express their ideas in an inclusive and respectful environment, you can develop a clear team direction toward success. 


Ensuring that your team feels their input is important allows for individual empowerment, as well as the creation of a cohesive environment, it’s one of the best coaching skills for managers to have.


2. Show your team the importance and relevance of the business strategy


Project management can be particularly difficult if your team is working towards individual goals. 


Developing a team strategy over a particular period allows your team to work towards a shared aim while being a fantastic team management skill to have under your belt. This should of course reflect the goals of the business, so it is important to consider this when creating a strategy specific to your team.


Show the team how their contributions to hitting your targets will positively impact the business, this will encourage them to understand how their actions can make a difference as well as boost team morale.


3. Fostering a culture of trust shows your team you are confident in their abilities


When a team is effectively communicating with one another, the next step is to delegate roles and tasks effectively across each member, this is a great example of how to effectively lead a team. 


It can be tempting to continually guide members to make sure that the job gets done properly, however having this approach can actually de-motivate employees and encourage a reduced interest in their work. The most inspiring thing you can do is to trust your employee’s abilities.


If team members feel you have confidence in them, they will in turn feel more valuable to the team and their projects. This promotes more care in their work, and the freedom to enhance their abilities to benefit the business.


4. Give recognition when it’s due


While giving recognition for hard work or exceeding targets might be more of a quality than a skill, as a manager, it is beneficial to recognise and give praise when a team is doing a great job. 


We all like to be appreciated for our achievements, so there is no better way to show a team that they are valued whenever a project is successfully completed.


The other side of this is to recognise when teams need more training. Take the time as a manager to help them acquire new skills or to understand processes – this can benefit employee output and team morale.


5. Time management keeps your team on track


Continually reviewing the priorities of your teams workload allows you to create a clear time structure for each member. 


Flexibility in managing deadlines allows your team to feel more relaxed and reduces anxiety levels. This also applies to workloads that are completed ahead of schedule. When work is completed sooner than expected you don’t need to wait for a specific deadline, this allows your team to focus on other tasks.


Take the time to keep updated with each of your team’s workloads, and collaborate in continually updating deadlines and priorities to fit the needs of your team.
