Job Summary:
Responsible for establishing and documenting the optimum casting, trim, and peripheral equipment settings and adjustments necessary to produce quality aluminum die castings in accordance with control plans and production requirements and includes training of others in setup techniques and troubleshooting of casting problems.
Essential Functions:
- Define by analysis and experimentation the optimum setup of new and existing dies including:
- metal pressure
- cavity fill rate & time
- sleeve sizing
- lowest scrap
- projected area
- gate velocity
- machine tonnage requirements
- gating and runnering,
- temperatures
- shortest cycle time
- machine capabilities vs. tool requirements
- Use shot monitoring equipment to document processes and troubleshoot casting problems.
- Produce detailed documentation of processes. Verify that documented processes are repeatable.
- Initiate reviews of existing processes and search for and implement continuing improvements.
- Troubleshoot difficult casting problems and assist other setup personnel in solving problems.
- Train others in principles of die casting, equipment setup, shot monitoring, troubleshooting, use of setup sheets, and quality systems procedures.
- Assist Tool Engineering in making design decisions on new dies, including cavity orientation, runner and gate size and location, slide and core configuration, cooling, etc.
- Perform design-of-experiments on jobs as needed to diagnose casting problems. Use statistical techniques where appropriate.
- Participate in last shot meetings and initiate and/or perform corrective action analysis as required.
- Perform machine capability studies on die cast machines.
- Evaluate and recommend modern technology and ideas for improvements to production.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and ability to multi-task.
- Computer knowledge and 1-2 years of Windows applications experience preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in high pressure aluminum die casting environment preferred but not required.
- Minimum two-year (2) technical degree or equivalent with additional training in die casting principles.
- Three to five years (3-5) as process engineer in high pressure die casting or related field with previous technical experience.
- Ability to analyze problems in an organized and thorough manner.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel on topics ranging from basic (e.g. casting technique) to complex (e.g. interpretation of shot traces).
