Job Title: Miner Drill & Blast Location: Kathu, Northern Cape Salary: Market Related Contract/ Perm: Perm Discipline: Mining ________________________________________ Main Task & Responsibility: • To perform mining activities required for rock breaking underground hard rock operations in order to achieve production targets and meet quality standards Minimum Qualifications (Essential unless otherwise indicated): • Grade 12 • Blasting Ticket Experience and Requirements (Essential unless otherwise indicated): • 4 years as a Miner in most of the following disciplines (roof / face prep, charging and blasting) • Valid Code B/EB Driver’s license • Must obtain symbol B at the Dover Assessment Knowledge and Skills (Essential unless otherwise indicated): • Knowledge of safety standards and procedures including safe declarations, explosive regulations, safe keeping and record keeping, leadership skills and capability and apply basic principles of mining, company policies, procedures and disciplinary codes • Identify misfired explosives and explosive accessories and secure in appropriate old explosive boxes (cartridges / detonators) • At end of shift, hand boxes over to Miner Charging and Blasting • Call on explosive emulsion unit and oversee emulsion charging process • Conduct viscosity test and instruct to proceed with emulsion charging process or withdraw and instruct Emulsion driver to report back to Foreman. Delay emulsion charging process until satisfactory viscosity • Place unused explosives back into Explosives Box and reconcile stock against explosives used • Mark roof lines by drawing in survey line as per survey note, draw in block lines • Mark holes for roof bolts on block grid as well as holes for services / eye bolts • Make continuous and regular status and work progress reports throughout the shift to the Production Control Room and Shift Boss • Execute changes in daily production plan • Identify constraints and deviations from the plan and issue new instructions if required • Conduct general housekeeping • Report and influence any issues identified in own area. Record non-conformances and actions required • Escalate problems to the Shift Boss and/or Production Control. Receive daily plan from shift boss and plan daily activities • Conduct re-entry examination and declare area to the workplace as safe for face preparation and drill rigs • Take wet and dry bulb temperatures, gas readings and air velocity measurements and record in safe declaration • Oversee the watering down of the face by support workers and that sockets and lifters are identified, washed out and plugged • Examine face for misfires and treat where required • Draw in centre line and offsets as per survey note • Draw in marker, gradient and direction lines • Mark rounds accordingly • Make continuous and regular status and work progress reports throughout the shift to the Production Control Room and Shift Boss • Conduct pre- and post-start inspection of LDV and operate LDV in accordance with safety standards • Obtain information regarding number of holes marked for specific face from drill preparation team (miner) • Receive information regarding number of holes drilled in specific face from drilling team (operator) • Prepare primers according to blasting requirements • Make safe with scaler and pinch bar • De-sludge shot holes and supervise support workers • Check the length of the holes and if not drilled according to the drill standard • Determine sequence of detonation to ensure optimum blast. Insert primers accordingly and call for the Manitou to assist where needed • Make continuous and regular status and work progress reports throughout the shift to the Production Control Room and Shift Boss. Execute changes in daily production plan • Ensure section is clear by conducting an inspection of the area and instruct employees / contractors to vacate the area • Wait for instruction before igniting rounds in accordance with blasting schedule • Ignite misfired old explosives • Complete attendance timesheet at beginning and end of shift and proceed with shift clearance • Comply with safety, health and environmental standards. Identify and report unsafe and hazardous situations in work area • Participate in safety meetings • Assist Shift/Section in obtaining information, check for accuracy and capture data. File documents per procedure • Conduct re-entry examination and declare area to the workplace as safe for roof preparation and roof bolting. Know and exercise safety pillars • Allocate water down (dust allying) to Support Worker and ensure that it is done properly • Where necessary, assist the Support Worker in the execution of duties • Instruct and supervise Support Worker Roof and Face Prep to perform barring operation in preparing the roof and to make safe • If Support Worker Roof and Face Prep are not available, perform barring operation and / or allocate barring operations to competent Support Workers • Supervise Operator Roof Bolter to achieve daily production plan • Instruct Support Worker Roof and Face Prep to smooth out road way with scaler • If Support Workers Roof and Face Prep are not available, perform smooth out operation and / or allocate smooth out operations to competent support workers • Conduct pre- and post-start inspection of LDV and operate LDV in accordance with safety standards • Instruct Support Workers Roof and Face Prep to back lash face with scaler • Instruct support workers to expose lifter holes with shovel • Supervise support workers in removing pumps (air / electrical water pumps) and all other equipment in the blasting area • Barricade area to ensure safe blasting area and prevent unauthorised entry • The candidate will be appointed on the condition of being certified medically fit as per Mine Health and Safety Act 29/1996 • Preference will be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged groups to support the company’s Employment Equity plan Remuneration: • Remuneration will be based on a competitive all-inclusive flexible package. The successful candidate that conforms to all said requirements and experience will be appointed on this grading.
